World Breastfeeding Week

You and your baby each have unique needs, which is why one nursing style may not fit all moms and babies. There are many different breastfeeding positions, from the cross-cradle hold to the football hold. In fact, it’s a good idea to change breastfeeding positions from time to time to allow your breasts to fully empty and to prevent conditions like mastitis.

From an Osteopathic perspective breast feeding creates a lot of tension on your upper back and neck if you are not in the right position. This is especially noticed when the baby isn’t supported when feeding. I know that your baby is hungry and needs to be fed, but if you are uncomfortable you are slowly damaging your supine, muscles and ligaments causing inflammation. Most of the time this will lead to chronic pain in the upper back neck and even headaches.

 Top 3 tips for reducing your pain:

  1. Sit in a good supportive chair. Bum right to the back.
  2. Use pillows to help bring the baby up to you breast and don’t go down to your baby.
  3. Whilst feeding make sure you look up and if you can, rest your head on the back of the chair

 

This will definitely reduce tension the tension in the upper back and neck and allow you to feed for longer if need. It will also stop you from getting a sore upper back and neck.
